The Basics of Poker

Poker

Several variations of poker are known. These variations include Stud Poker, Draw Poker, and Community Card Poker. A number of these games can be played with up to eight players.

The game is played using a standard 52-card pack. Each player is dealt seven cards. These cards are dealt face up. Each player is allowed to discard two to three cards.

After each round of betting, the player with the highest hand wins the pot. When a player has two hands that are identical, the tie is broken by the highest unmatched card.

A player is called a “caller” if he or she decides to raise the bet. If a player declines to raise, the player is called a “dropper”. A player who “drops” has to put in the same number of chips as the players before him.

The next player to the left must then “drop” or “raise” his or her bet. The first player to the left is then called a “sucker”. A player who “suckers” is said to have a bad hand. If a player has a pair of kings and a pair of diamonds, he or she probably is trying to get a flush.

When two or more players have a four of a kind of the same rank, the high card breaks the tie. When a pair of fours and a pair of kings are the same rank, the high card breaks the two ties.
