However, federal crackdowns on the mob’s influence on casinos led to investment bankers and hotel chains buying out mafia-owned establishments. The new owners wanted to keep the casinos open and operating, but without mob interference.
To achieve that goal, the casinos focused on customer service and offered “comps” to players who spent a lot of time playing and/or a lot of money gambling. Comps include free hotel rooms, discounted travel packages, buffet meals, and show tickets. The casino also monitored and adjusted the payouts of its video poker and slot machines. This process required a team of gaming mathematicians and computer programmers, who are now known as gaming analysts. In the 1990s, casinos also began to use technology to monitor their own activities. For example, some betting chips have built-in microcircuitry that interact with electronic systems in the tables and allow the casino to oversee each wager minute by minute. The roulette wheels are electronically monitored to discover any statistical deviations quickly. In addition, some casinos have catwalks in the ceiling over the casino floor that let surveillance personnel look down through one-way glass at the tables and slots.
